Hans Willem Bentinck

Hendrik van Nassau-Ouwerkerk
Became the equerry of prince William in 1666 and made a career with the cavalry. In 1683 he was appointed Major General and during the expedition he was largely responsible for the horses. In 1689 he became 'master of the horse' of King William
James II
Succeeded his brother Charles II as king in 1685 and, just like his brother, ruled without Parliament
Louis XIV
Became king of France as a four year old in 1643 with his mother as lady governor and the cardinal as Master of State
Mary Stuart II
Oldest daughter of king James II. She married her cousin William in 1677 and moved to The Hague. She does not play a role in the expedition but has a significant part in the background
